<br />
This time I got lucky and a very nice chap happened to be selling a pile of marines painted up as Minotaurs.<br />
<br />
While not up to the standard that I like to paint my own stuff at there were a few of major points about the foot troop auctions the bloke had up. <br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>They were listed as Menitaurs. (Search bonus!)</li>
<li>The paint doesn't look too thick.</li>
<li>They had a lot of Anvil Industries Spartan and Roman crests on them.</li>
<li>They had a lot Scribor Spartan Shields on them. (More than I'll ever need.)</li>
<li>Cheap. ( Like me, well what did you expect from a guy who does Miser's Guides.) </li>
<li>I can use them for games as I slowly replace them with my own and restore them as I go along. </li>
</ul>
With all that in mind the mouse finger went into overdrive a few times and I bagged.<br />
<br />
5 Lightning Claw Terminators.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Imperial%2040k/Minotaurs/Minotaur%20WiPs/Lightning%20Termis_zps9uxsqbxg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Imperial%2040k/Minotaurs/Minotaur%20WiPs/Lightning%20Termis_zps9uxsqbxg.png" height="220" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
1 Space Marine Captain<br />
1 Librarian.<br />
8 Vanguard marine.<br />
Assault Marines squad . ( 9 I think, jump packs look suspect but I happen to have a few spares knocking about.)<br />
3 Tactical Marine squads. ( 30 SMs)<br />
Marine Devastator squad. (Guessing 10 marines).<br />
<br />
All for £67.50. Not bad considering the Helmet crests are £1 for four from Anvil Industries and Zeus only knows how much the Scribor shields cost. Say approximately £1.05 a Marine no matter what type and 40 pence of which is extra resin Greekness.<br />
<br />
Even with the inevitable casualties the restoration process will incur, worth it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Imperial%2040k/Minotaurs/Minotaur%20WiPs/Minos%20bundle_zpspozyd8bz.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Imperial%2040k/Minotaurs/Minotaur%20WiPs/Minos%20bundle_zpspozyd8bz.png" height="312" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Also a box of new Devastators, 30 FW Minotaur Power Armour Shoulder pads, 10 FW Minotaur Terminator Shoulder Pads, 1x FW Minotaur Rhino doors, Badab War Imperial Armour 10, 150 lil magnets, matching drill bits bought in various Ebay auctions.<br />
<br />
All this means I'm flat broke and hoping that myself or the missus beat a certain spaniel to the letter box every day for the next week or so.<br />
<br />
Not only that, I bought a Tactical Blood Angels box to test the paint scheme on ( Also 10 FW Minotaur Shoulder pads) and found about 5 marines in a box of random. <a href="http://www.puppetswar.eu/search.php?search_query=Temistokles&submit_search=Search" target="_blank">10 Temistokles heads and 5 Temistokles</a> shields from PuppetsWar because of the well sculpted Greek key pattern on some of the bits.<br />
<br />
So more Power Armour than I probably need or will get round to painting with plenty of extra Greek detail to keep me busy for a while.<br />
<br />
On a cheaper note I found a Predator and Whirlwind in another box of random that I thought I had sold ages ago. ( I really have too much GW stuff in the house.)<br />
<br />
Now to get some painted before that lot turns up.. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15299619773476420208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6127214330003127530.post-35222832312705960302015-03-28T10:14:00.000+00:002015-03-28T10:14:14.180+00:00Minotaurs Space Marines<b><span style="color: #bf9000;">Where have I been?</span></b> <br />
<br />
Been a bit lacking in hobby mojo recently, after a few failed starts on things I should paint (mainly the big piles of 40k Chaos Marines and Orks). I have found the something I have wanted to do for some time that floats my boat enough to keep motivation at a reasonable level.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #bf9000;">Why Space Marines?</span></b><br />
<b><span style="color: #bf9000;"> </span></b><br />
Something about blocks of Space Marine units on the table has always appealed to me, probably the cohesive colour scheme across all the whole army being visually striking, coupled with the forgiving nature of game play with them. Add that to a low model count and for a painfully slow painter like myself they are a gift.<br />
<br />
Last time I started SMs was the end of 2nd Edition although the army didn't get up to playable strength til 3rd Ed. Red Scorpions was the choice then and I enjoyed them a fair bit. Forge World released minis too late for that and I always was regretted the loss of my fairly original choice of chapter as it became a pretty common army as well as the fact I couldn't justify buying into the FW bits for the biggest and most complete army I had duplicating what I had painted already.<br />
<br />
Scroll forward in time and my old Red Scorps are gone, 3 rules editions later I'm ready to paint Marine again.<br />
<br />
I always had a plan for my own chapter, but after some time have decided that getting the vehicle doors, shoulder pads and other bling sculpted across a whole army was just setting myself up for yet another failed or stalled project.<br />
<br />
After a lot of Google I decided on one supported by Forgeworld as a sort of compromise between my own chapter ideas ( A Greek themed army) and my need to avoid getting into a sculpting painting nightmare.<br />
This way I can buy a lot of extra detail from FW, yet still invest a bit of sculpting time into any particular unit of mini I want to have an extra bit of presence.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #bf9000;">Minotaurs Chapter</span></b> <br />
<br />
That decided time to get something started.<br />
<br />
I grabbed a box of Blood Angel Tactical SMs from the local GW and a set of paints for the scheme. BAs were chosen because of the Sergeants GrecoRoman bodyform armour and of course the 32mm bases.<br />
<br />
Hmm speaking of bases.....<br />
<br />
Whilst waiting on ForgeWorld Minotaur shoulder pads I had a play with base designs to enforce the theme.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Imperial%2040k/Minotaurs/Minotaur%20WiPs/mino%20bases%20003_zpsi8jpulxw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Imperial%2040k/Minotaurs/Minotaur%20WiPs/mino%20bases%20003_zpsi8jpulxw.jpg" height="353" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Home made Greek Key bases.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
Starting with a Tactical squad using ForgeWorld shoulder pads seemed like a sensible place and a test mini was in order once the shoulder pads arrived, to work out which was the best way for me to paint them.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Imperial%2040k/Minotaurs/test%20mno%20001_zpstokpv78u.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Imperial%2040k/Minotaurs/test%20mno%20001_zpstokpv78u.jpg" height="395" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Minotaurs test mni.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #bf9000;"> </span>Overall I'm happy with the result, just a case of painting more to refine how I get there. <br />

<br />
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b><u>What is it?</u></b></span></span></span><br />
<br />
I have been using this material for nigh on 15 years now, ever since I
found about 20 square meters of it leaning against a bin. Pretty much
every project log I have posted will have some in there somewhere.<br />
So what the hell am I on about when I say Foamex....<br />
<br />
Most often found being used in signage in shops PVC Foam is an Economic,
Versatile and Lightweight material. It has a smooth matt silk finish
and high impact resistance. Foam pvc will not rot or swell like timber
and can be easily Cut - Sawn or Drilled and even Carved and Sanded. <br />
(Not to be confused with Foam Core, which is a sandwich of lightweight foam between to bits of card.)<br />
<br />
Most commonly I have seen it in 3mm or 5mm thicknesses as signs but I
have bought a 1.5mm thick sheet before and acquired 4mm sheets. <br />
For most things I have used 3mm as it is nice and easy to work with.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ffd966;"><b><u><span style="font-size: medium;">Where to get it on the cheap?</span></u></b></span><br />
<br />
It is pretty cheap to buy in the first place but the best way to get it is for free.<br />
<br />
Watch all your local stores to see if they use seasonal signage
advertising sales or particular product lines. These are the sort of
signs that are quite often thrown away at the end of said promotion.<br />
<br />
There are two ways to get yer mitts on these signs the first being <b><i>ask</i></b> .<br />
This is the best way, you just go up and ask if it would be possible to
collect the signs once the store is ready to throw them out.<br />
Why is it the best way? Well it's legal no matter where you are in the
world, it will be clean and if all goes well you might even be able to
set up a regular supply of this brilliant material. <br />
<br />
The second is bin skimming, skip diving, trash trawling what ever you want to call it.<br />
Basically look around the waste of shops and see if any is about.<br />
<span style="color: orange;">Be very aware of the law concerning taking waste in
your part of the world and Really pay attention to any heath risks that
may apply.<br />
I'd hate to lose a hobbyist to a trash compactor, disturbed tramp attack or some nasty disease like viles.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ffd966;"><u><b><span style="font-size: medium;">How can you use it?</span></b></u></span><br />
<br />
Because this material is very easy to shape it's uses are pretty much
unlimited, Iv'e made things as small as a bionic eye up to big buildings
you can hide Titan in, hell I have even made a Titan that used the
stuff extensively.<br />
<br />
Here is a rough guide to using it:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: orange;">First thing is to make clear is Super Glue is a must, I have never found a plastics glue that bonds the stuff.<br />
Secondly, be prepared for statically charged shavings clinging to stuff during cutting,carving and sanding.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ffd966;"><b><u>Cutting</u></b></span><br />
The easiest way to cut 3mm thick or less is to use a knife and repeat
score the line of cutting until you are through, although saws will cut
through it easily I find that it is a messier process.<br />
<br />
Scoring will work for greater thicknesses than 3mm but patience is the
key, fine toothed saws are probably best, for curved shapes I normally
use a Jigsaw or Coping saw with a blade designed for metal. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ffd966;"><b><u>Carving</u></b></span><br />
This stuff is great for whittling or carving, I normally use a scalpel.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #ffd966;"><b><u>Sanding</u></b></span><br />
Treat as a soft wood when sanding and you'll be grand. Coarse grade
sandpaper will leave scoring marks, fine grade emery paper should be
used for finishing.Will create a fair bit of dust.<br />
<br />
<u><b><span style="font-size: medium;">Here are a selection of images showing work I have done with this material.</span></b></u><br />
<br />
Much of the structure and a lot of the details of this Slaanesh Questor
scout titan were made using Foamex, even the base was made from it.<br />

I took on a Alliance of Astra Militarum and Grey Knights and it was just an all out brawl, no mission.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/MegaBossfront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/MegaBossfront.jpg" height="400" width="367" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Da Kommanda</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Whilst I'm not about to embark on a battle report I will say my 5 Mega Nobs and Mega Armour Warboss with KFF mek were great fun. With the assistance of 19 shoota boys and their nob managed to intercept and kill Draco, about 5 Terminator Knights and a Terminator Librarian over the the game and move on to krumping a unit of 6 power armoured Knights and 3 heavy Armoured Ogryns after that. <br />
<br />
As it wasn't a serious game I'm not going to read to much into it except Mega = Fun, it also means much less painting. He he.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Meganobzmob1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Meganobzmob1.jpg" height="336" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mega Fun.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
With the Bound/Unbound thing in 40k now and a reasonable pile of metal Mega Nobs and a second metal Ghaz on the shelf of much to do, it seems a good time to be a silly Kommanda and get some done.<br />
<br />
First up is Ghazgull Thraka, I've already chopped one of these old metal minis about for a Warboss so it is familiar territory. The fact I have a Warboss done rather suggests a Big Mek should be next. ( That and the bellowing voice in my head I can only assume is Mork.) <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Da%20Meks%20Wurkshop/Big%20Mek%20bits_zpsadupsusp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Da%20Meks%20Wurkshop/Big%20Mek%20bits_zpsadupsusp.jpg" height="316" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bitz for Big Mek</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
As I was running a Kustom Force Field Mek in the game the other night I'll be slapping a KFF on the back of him.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/BigMekback_zpsea3a2bb7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/BigMekback_zpsea3a2bb7.jpg" height="400" width="330" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">KFF inspirashun.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Trying to avoid the 'just another Ghaz' look, the first job is detail removal and as much reposing as the mini allows, lots of metal whittling ( those pesky connection cables at the waist and arms take some real work to remove) and detail removal ensues creating a mess that must be cleaned before the beloved returns from work and this is the result (apart from the mess).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Da%20Meks%20Wurkshop/Big%20Mek%20body1_zpsjs9xhowt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Da%20Meks%20Wurkshop/Big%20Mek%20body1_zpsjs9xhowt.jpg" height="248" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Big Mek Body prepped.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now to loose the Twin Shoota and add a Kustom Mega Blasta for that arm, remodel the 'cutty' claw arm to a more Mek useful 'clampy' version and re-detail the chest plate. (Right knee has already had a Forgeworld brass glyph added.) I foresee a razor saw and yet more mess.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Da%20Meks%20Wurkshop/Big%20Mek%20001_zpszrkyeovf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Da%20Meks%20Wurkshop/Big%20Mek%20001_zpszrkyeovf.jpg" height="385" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From small spores great fungus grows....slowly.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/BannersandSigs/vsign3.png" /><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: #f1c232;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>Basing Materials: Sand, Gravel and Rock</i></span></b></span></span></div>
<br />
Once again I'm back with my penny pinching ways to offer you another way of saving vital cash for miniatures.<br />
<br />
This one is all about simple yet effective basing substrate on the cheap.<br />
<br />
A few companies have been flogging sand and grit to gamers at greatly
inflated prices for a while now so it is time to try and counter it.<br />
<br />
One of the problems with buying such stuff on the cheap is that the
cheapest available tend to be for use with the building, gardening, or
landscaping trades. And this means <b><i>bulk</i></b>. None of us are really going to need 25kg of sand so the first examples are nice small manageable quantities at low low prices.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><u><b>Grit</b></u></span></span><br />
<br />
Mavis is right, I swear by it too!<br />
I use the Wilko brand from the Wilkinsons (UK) chain of stores but I'm
sure Pets at Home, Walmart or whatever your local cheap stuff or pet
supplies store will have something of similar ilk.<br />
<br />
At the time of purchase (2nd Dec 2012) I picked up this 1kg bag up for
£1, whilst 1kg is still a bit much for basing it's easy enough to store
away in an old coffee jar and stick in a cupboard. It can be a bit rough
on it's own so I blend it with sand to get a mix of size granulation.(It's 2015 now and I still have plenty.)<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_9" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/birdgritwilko.jpg" height="600" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_9" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_1" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Chaos%2040K/Slaanesh/Slaanesh%20WIPs/SonicShoulderpad.jpg" height="402" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_1" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b><u><span style="font-size: medium;">Sand</span></u></b></span><br />
<br />
I don't really care about Mavis's digestive system but if you want fine
grade sand for your bases this is a good one.Once again this is the
Wilko brand and like the grit you should be able to find it in most
stores selling pet supplies.<br />
<br />
Same price too, £1 for 1kg.<br />
<br />
Personally I don't use sand on it's own as I find after spray
undercoating then painting it starts to lose some of the texture and can
become blobbish.<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_2" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/wilkobirdsand.jpg" height="600" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_2" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/40K%20Xenos/Da%20Orks/Da%20Meks%20Wurkshop/Meganob5.jpg" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b><u><span style="font-size: medium;">Blend of Sand and Grit</span></u></b></span><br />
<br />
What I have done here is blend the sand and grit together in a small
wide necked jar (Crisp/Chip dip jars are ideal) so that I can dip in
model bases covered in PVA glue to coat them in the grit mix. A rough
guide is 1 part sand to 2 or 3 parts grit but it's something that you
should play about with til you're happy.<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_3" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Tutorialgritsandblend.jpg" height="473" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_3" width="600" /><br />
<br />
The left over sand and grit I have stashed away pure in coffee jars in
the loft as I don't use either in pure form and do not need them to
hand.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b><u><span style="font-size: medium;">Slate</span></u></b></span><br />
<br />
We have to get a little bit more inventive to get small amounts of slate
as it's normally sold in 25kg bags for gardens, driveways and paths or
as slates for house roofs.<br />
<br />
Also a bit of work and some tools are required to get the most out of it.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/PLUM_SLATE_CHIPPINGS_20MM.jpg" /><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><u><b><span style="font-size: medium;">Slate Sources.</span></b></u></span><br />
<br />
I'm going to dismiss roofing slates as a source as this is growing
scarce in these days of energy efficiency awareness and is also for
houses of a certain age which are not common in all parts of the world.<br />
<br />
If you are lucky enough to live in a suburban setting you probably just
need to walk round the block and you will find a household that has
used the stuff in their front garden, some of it always seems to migrate out
onto the public pavement/sidewalk at which point it's fair game ( Do Not
be nipping over garden boundaries and helping yourself, no matter how
petty it's still theft). You may even have some in your own garden or be
able to visit a relative or friend who has.<br />
<br />
If not you could visit a garden/building center, walk around the place
for a bit there is bound to be some just lying around on the floor, you
can probably pick up odd scraps here and there without any trouble. <br />
Possibly honesty is the best policy with this route, you never know ask
politely and the store won't mind you walking out with a handful of
floor gatherings, this works best if you are making some form of
purchase already mind. <img alt="" border="0" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/images/smilies/wink3.gif" title="Wink" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b><i><span style="font-size: medium;">Preparing and using Slate</span></i></b></span><br />
<br />
Ok so you found some and got it home, so how do you use it?<br />
<br />
I use Slate in 2 ways;<br />
<br />
Large 'hero' rocks, you know the sort of thing the main
man/woman/monster of your army standing heroically poses upon a jutting
slab of rock (stupid really in a ballistics rich environment but hey it
looks cool). <br />
<br />
This one is just a case of pawing through your stash of slate to find a suitably angled and sized chunk.<br />
<br />
You can use a pair of pliers, wire cutters or Mole Grips to nibble away
at it to help it fit the base or re-size and shape you chosen bit of
slate.<br />
<span style="color: orange;">Of course wear Protective glasses or goggles, bits may well ping off during this process.</span><br />
Don't forget to save up the smaller off cuts they will also be useful.<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_4" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Slatetrimclippers.jpg" height="493" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_4" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Slatetrimclippersdone.jpg" /><br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/SlatetrimMoleshalfway.jpg" /><br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_5" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/slatetrimmolesdone.jpg" height="449" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_5" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_7" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Chaos%2040K/Slaanesh/Slaanesh%20WIPs/DPStage3RHview.jpg" height="546" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_7" width="600" /><br />
<br />
The second way is finer bits of slate used to coat bases in the same way as grit.<br />
This requires a few simple tools and bits to prepare the slate.<br />
<br />
Hammer, slate, old sock or work glove ( Work Gloves are better as they
can take the beating) protective goggles or glasses. Area of solid
concrete or some such is also a must (not many people have an anvil in the back garden).<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_8" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Tutorialslatesmashertoolkit.jpg" height="552" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_8" width="600" /><br />
<br />
Place you're slate in the glove or sock, only a couple of bits at a time as too much actually makes the process slower.<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_6" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>

<br />
<br />
Select an area of good solid concrete (or your Anvil). The smoother the better - I found
slabs to be the best ( don't be smashing nice new paths about btw, it
causes arguments lol).<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_10" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Tutorialgoodsolidconcretesurface.jpg" height="519" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_10" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<i><b>Hammertime !</b></i> <span style="color: darkorange;">First put on you're protective glasses.</span>
The glove is to capture the bits as you smash them up but is by no
means guaranteed to stop sharp bits of stone flying out! (Socks even
more so.)<br />
<br />
Place the glove containing the slate on the concrete surface and have at it with the hammer<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_11" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Tutorialslatehammertime2.jpg" height="565" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_11" width="600" /><br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_13" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Tutorialslatehammertime1.jpg" height="478" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_13" width="600" /><br />
<br />
Note the damage, this is why old gloves are required, they will be no good for normal use after this.<br />
Also this can be a bit loud, remember you neighbours might not appreciate the noise of some loon smacking a glove full of sedimentary rock with a hammer and try to choose sensible times of day accordingly.<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_17" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Tutorialglovedamage.jpg" height="440" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_17" width="600" /><br />
<br />
Over a bit of paper (so it is easier to collect up the small bits) tip out the glove.<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_15" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>

<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_14" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>

<br />
Roughly sort out the bigger bits and pop them into a pot, then tip the smallest parts into a different pot<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_12" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>

<br />
Then you are ready to use it on some bases.<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_16" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>

<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/Tutorialpuresmashedslatepainted.jpg" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<b><u><span style="font-size: medium;"> <span style="color: #f1c232;">Terracotta.</span></span></u></b><br />
<br />
I won't go into much detail with terracotta as it will pretty much be a
complete repeat of the above entry for slate. In particular the smashing
up process is exactly the same.<br />
<br />
Flower Pots Planters.<br />
East to obtain, walk in to a garden center and buy away, when I wrote this you could get a 4 inch flower pot for about £0.55.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/plantpot.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Tiles.<br />
The preferred terracotta medium, once again single tiles can normally be
bought in DIY shops for about 50 pence, used cunningly they are great
for simulating broken slabs of concrete to denote fallen walls etc.<br />
<br />

<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b><u><span style="font-size: medium;">Quick mention on fixing all this stuff to bases.</span></u></b></span><br />
<br />
Just a quick explanation I always use PVA glue to fix finer grade
grit/slate to bases, when that is all dry I then use a water thinned PVA
(about 60% water to 40% PVA) washed over it all to seal the substrate
and improve the adhesion to the base. <br />
This stops the substrate absorbing too much undercoat and paint and
helps with the issue of little bits falling of and moving to places you
don't want it.<br />
<br />
With large bits of slate/terracotta I use Super Glue to fix it to the
base and sometimes a bit of GS or Milliput squeezed in around the edges
for extra strength.<br />
<br />
To add a mini to the top I normally Drill and Pin all the way through
the base, slate and into the model for strength, use an old drill bit as
it will blunt it and be patient as you go.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15299619773476420208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6127214330003127530.post-83943927247148902392015-02-15T16:35:00.000+00:002015-02-21T13:12:26.368+00:00Komanda GrubKop gathers da Boyz.<span style="color: #f1c232;">WAAAARGH!</span><br />
<br />
That is right you read correctly...<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;">WAAAARGH!</span><br />
<br />
<br />
Not very Nurgly is it? And in this case not even Warhammer Fantasy Battle.<br />
<br />
After my first visit in a long time to the local gaming club it is apparent the 40K still is king of the heap when it comes to getting a game with the minimum of pre-arrangement.<br />
<br />
Add to that the fact that one of my good lady's work colleagues want's to start playing tabletop battles and I need to get my 40k collection up to speed.<br />
<br />
After a long break from the hobby I suddenly find myself with a pile of outdated books and a need to spend money on Codex Orks and the basic rulebook.<br />
Why Orks?<br />
Purely because out of all my incomplete 40k armies it is the one I have the most painted for that I am happy with. It is also the biggest pile of unpainted plastic out of all my 40k.<br />
<br />
Pushing the Looted Wagons to one side for now ( Gork I wish I hadn't enjoyed building and painting those so much!) I have a reasonable amount table ready, even if it doesn't contain enough infantry.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ard Boyz</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
Long ago I started this army and the original idea was a very vehicle heavy mobile army.<br />
Random presents and magpie purchases kind of derailed this and some of the stuff I bought probably won't work due to the codex change.<br />
<br />
Painting boyz bores the fungus out of me but needs doing, (by boyz I mean all the more basic Infantry) and I only ever managed to paint a few trukk mobs worth of the Gitz.<br />
Gubbinz was always more my style but I don't know how that fits into the current army book, I know Looted Wagon is a White Dwarf not codex unit now but can't get the Codex and Rulebook til the 28th of Feb to find out what tank and mecanikal kinds or joy it will contain.<br />
<br />
I will be facing Imperial Guard ( even that has changed name to Astra Militarum)and can only assume that it still is an army full of lots of squishy oomies, guns and tanks still. Thus I will look to units that should work against that first. That said the chaps never played before so the beard and cheese need to stay in the case for a while.<br />
<br />
So with all that waffle in mind Trukks, Shoota boyz, Slugga boyz, a basic Warboss seem like safe starting point to add to all the stuff I have painted already. ( The Goff stuff in the Gallery doodad top right.)<br />
<br />
Time to have a rummage about and dig out all those Black Reach Slugga boyz and Warboss as a starting point.<br />
Even if I just get them prepped and glued I can at least offer a nice target rich environment for the new Guard player train on.<br />

<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Cotton Buds and Lollypop Sticks</b></span></span></div>
<br />
Miser, skinflint, stingy git call it what you will,,but when it comes to
the addiction of plastic crack every penny saved is more I can give to
GW for yet more minis.<br />
<br />
I've been found upside in dumpsters, skips and bins all around my local
area salvaging interesting bits n bobs for various projects for about 22
years now.Working in recycling now has only made me worse.<br />
<br />
It's caused some 'interesting' conversations but luckily no legal action so far.<br />
<br />
So whats the point of the waffle? Erm.. anyway the idea is to share some
of the more socially more acceptable things you might find useful.<br />
<br />
This one is one of my all time favourites the lollypop stick (sucker stick) cotton bud (Q tip) combo.<br />
<br />
First off select your Lolly type, it obviously has to have a hollow
plastic stick and be tasty. You can just cut the lolly off and sling it
if you are worried about dentist bills though, this is after all meant
to be cheap.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/Materials/chupa_chups.jpg" /><br />
<br />
The second part is the cotton buds, here is a bit of counter intuitive thing for a misers guide... <i>buy the expensive ones</i> they are made of thicker plastic and are stronger and easier to work with.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/Materials/CottonBuds.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Here's the good bit, these 2 things seem to be made to go together. The cotton bud fits perfectly inside the lolly stick.<br />
<br />
<table class="ncode_imageresizer_warning" id="ncode_imageresizer_warning_1" style="width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="td1" width="20"><br /></td><td class="td2"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/Materials/DSCF1636.jpg" height="264" id="ncode_imageresizer_container_1" width="600" /><br />
<br />
Main thing is with these is that super glue is a must, they just aint the right stuff to use plastics glue on.<br />
<br />
That aside here is a selection of things you can do with them, although the only real limit is imagination.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/Materials/tubes1i.jpg" /><br />

<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/Materials/tubes1d.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Now if you are really bored you can play a quick game of spot the lollypop sticks and cotton buds...<br />

<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>Cheap 1mm Styrene</i></span></b></span><br />

<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/Materials/Styrene_Plant_Marker.jpg" /></div>
<br />
<br />
Styrene, it's a word you'll see a lot when you read conversion blogs or see pictures of scratch built wonders.<br />
Normally bought in hobby shops in sheets of about A4 (approx US Letter Size), sometimes referred to as Plasticard.<br />
<br />
I have grown to hate cutting up large sheets knowing full well that
later on I will want large pieces normally for some Ork gubbins and will have to go buy fresh, no
matter how many offcuts I save I still end up doing it.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b><span style="color: orange;">Free Styrene.</span></b></span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mmm freee stuff.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
Then the missus got into Gardening, well I say gardening, every summer
she seems to go into a plant buying frenzy. These are duly planted into the
garden and during the following year are eaten, dug up or just plain
peed to death by our three dogs.<br />
It was whilst clearing away the debris ready for the next years cycle of
this I noticed all the labels for the deceased plants were styrene.<br />
<br />
So start hunting round the garden ( your Mums, Grandparents etc ) for
all those discarded labels or ask if they throw them away and could they
save them up for you.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b><span style="color: orange;">Cheap Styrene.</span></b></span><br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" class="tcattdimgresizer" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/MisersGuide/labels-styrene.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Not got a gardening friend or member of the family? Not all is lost
you can buy cheap enough Plant Labels if you look around, just make sure
they are styrene by avoiding and <i>Rot Proof</i> ones they will normally be a oily feeling type of plastic that will not take to gluing in any form, even superglue.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: orange;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Using your Cheap Styrene.</b></span></span><br />
<br />
If you are buying blank writable Plant Labels then you can treat it just
as you would a sheet you have bought from a Hobby store.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: orange;"><b>Notes on Printed and Recycled Styrene use.</b></span><br />
<br />
Using the recycled Printed Plant Labels is pretty much as straight
forward as using new, but for the sake of completeness I will mention a
few of things worth bearing in mind.<br />
<br />
Always wash the recovered labels well, as well as the obvious compost
and dirt that will be on it you never know what Pesticides and other
substances might have been sprayed over it.<br />
<br />
The print, if covering large areas can interfere with gluing a little, super glue will stick to the ink and can pull it off the surface of the styrene meaning stuff under any load stress can pull apart,
liquid poly will dissolve the ink though. That said a quick rub with a
bit of Emery Paper (Wet n Dry) will sort the separation issue.<br />
<br />
The print can show through a bit if you are someone who uses very thin
paint layers and washes, so another reason for a quick sand off with a
bit of Emery Paper.<br />
<br />

Which means there isn't really that much that is worth taking pictures of.<br />
<br />
The main focus of my attention has still been the Chaos Warriors unit, with the purchase of a second box I decided that robbing two to bulk out my hand weapons and shield to a more usable 20 minis (15 just seemed to thin on the ground.)<br />
<br />
A unit filler (50mm X 50mm) and a lone warrior gain me an extra rank.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b>Warrior 10 </b></span><br />
<br />
The WoC is done and ready for priming and the need for another shield design gave me a practice run at spawning Nurglings (a project for later).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nurgling Shield</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Not 100% happy with where the moobs meet the belly or the way the thighs
are on the Nurgling, but for a 1st effort good enough to probably swap
the shield on to the Musician and get it a front rank space.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b>Unit filler.</b></span><br />
<br />
Certainly not saving much time on this, which is surprising on such a simple idea.<br />
I compared a normal Chaos Hound to the Dire Wolves I am going to use as Chaos Hounds and found a horribly noticeable size difference. So other uses for the standard models had to be found.<br />
<br />
Lots of fur repair to do on the hounds neck and eyes, also on the left shoulder of the warrior. Pretty much making up the detailing as I go along and of course there is always the ever present problem of 'what do I do for a shield design.' ( It'll be on his back.)<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Walkies !!!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b>Lord.</b></span><br />
<br />
A bit of progress on the Herald of Nurgle carcass I'm using to build a Lord from, guts, torn belly GSed up, the beginning of a belt, Black Ork arms from the bits box and a styrene thigh armour panel.<br />
Much the same as the unit filler he is being made up as I go along, so the head, shoulder armour are a mystery still, all I know is the weapon will be a mace and the Shield design will be a Nurgle symbol.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Maybe I'll get the two normal WoC and the Musician started next week, the Sorcerer is stalled as I try and work out a skin tone that goes well with the armour colours I have used on other warriors.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15299619773476420208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6127214330003127530.post-18415899007847839242015-01-25T16:36:00.000+00:002015-01-25T16:41:53.126+00:00More Warriors of Nurgle and Chaos Hounds<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b>Painting</b></span> <br />
<br />
Well, had 3 WoN of the same armour colour to paint so thought I'd try a mini batch paint session.<br />
<br />
It didn't make it past the armour stage as I did 3 different leathers and 3 different colours on the inside of the cloaks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/BatchpaintingWoN_zps3dd51b2b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/BatchpaintingWoN_zps3dd51b2b.jpg" height="338" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I just like too much variation through an army to stick at batch painting WoN but at least it is a pretty low model count army, unlike my 40K Orks. Experiment sort of failed as I moved on to painting a pair of them and split the Standard Bearer off to do individually.<br />

I also gave my captured part of the dining table a big old tidy up and got a pair of old Cotton reel drawers as storage to stop the dog stealing any more stuff off the table.Foiled on that front the hairy lil bleeder stole my wallet off the side board and chewed a credit card out of it.<br />

<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b>Spending</b></span> <br />
<br />
Seeing as the dog hit my wallet I thought it was time I did too. First thing to sort out was the gap in the front row of the Warriors unit by dropping in a Lord, after a lot of looking and dithering over Blight Kings, the Plastic Nurgle Lord and various other minis I decided to get a Herald of Nurgle body ( Back) off Ebay and see what I could do with that. Should be interesting, so far it's been adding organic parts to Man made ones, this chap will be the other way round as I intend to add armour to the torso, arm/s, head and some to the skinny leg.<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b> </b></span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lord of Nurgle to be.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b> </b></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b> </b></span>More core and some Mobility are probably a good idea so Chaos Hounds spring to mind ( no, not the Red and White one that keeps chewing plastic, damn Welsh Springer Spaniels). Although the standard kit is good enough Dire Wolves are better for a Nurgle conversion in my opinion ,so a box of those is in and the first 'test' mini is under the knife. So far I've just filled some of the 'Frankenstein' patch working and added a maggoty thing into the empty eye socket, pustules and other detailing to go on next. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Probably better get this puppy to the Vets.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Dragon Ogres also have hit the shelf of much to do, although I'm not sure about them as an army choice and if dedicating them ( visually, no rules) to Nurgle is a good idea either.<br />
<br />
More Chaos Warriors, yes I will be boring the world with more as I struggle to find ideas for Shield designs, Halberds this time though, which will at least offer a change of some sort.. <br />
<br />
I also saw some Nurgle Bile Trolls on ebay and clicked 'buy it now' on a whim, at a £10 saving on the Forge World cost and no postage on top seemed like a bargain. The casting is terrible, there is a bit missing and I reckon the closest they were ever to the Forge World factory was Beijing before they got to me. Nothing I can't sort with GS, but a tad annoying as I bought them so I had a Unit I didn't need to convert the daylights out of.<br />
<br />
Another thing sort of connected to the Hobby was a new Camera, an upgrade from a little auto pocket job (Fuji Z10) to a bridge camera (Nikon L330), so be prepared for some dubious Photography as I work it out.<br />
<br />
That lot should keep me busy for a while anyhoo.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15299619773476420208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6127214330003127530.post-83663125048661702852015-01-18T11:35:00.002+00:002015-01-18T11:36:47.806+00:00Warriors of Nurgle, bits and bobs.A bit of a scrappy selection of progress in this post I'm afraid as I try to get more of the Warriors unit done.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><b>Painting.</b></span><br />
<br />
Warriors 6 & 7 painted, taking the unit to near half strength (including a Lord and Sorcerer). Whilst I like the effect doing the Warriors different shades of green it isn't very good at helping me get them painted.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Warrior7_zps33935304.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Warrior7_zps33935304.jpg" height="640" width="490" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/WoN8_zps48deb1bd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/WoN8_zps48deb1bd.jpg" height="640" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
The eagle eyed among you may have noticed the lack of Static Grass on the last few painted minis, this is because I now have the only internally flocked spaniel in Sussex. Little blighter has a thing about chewing plastic pots and bottles and somehow nabbed the flock off my table, GW seem to have stopped doing the really light sand coloured static grass so I'm on the hunt for a replacement.<br />
Not so bad on this army as it's only just started, but very annoying if I can't get a match on my Tomb Kings..<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #f1c232;">Modelling.</span></b><br />
<br />
Had real trouble thinking of designs for the last few shields, but doing the Fly head on the Sorcerer has helped a bit spawning a fly head shield (which is a good chance to practice the colours for the Sorcerers head),a 'maggot' shield and with so many mouths done already a 'other end' design.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/flyheadshield_zpsb6df363c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/flyheadshield_zpsb6df363c.jpg" height="400" width="272" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Next up is 3 warriors that are the same colour (just how it's worked out) so I'll try and be a bit more 'batch painter' on those and speed myself up some, I'll probably end up doing bits on the Sorcerer in between as well. Also I have to finish off GSing up the Musicians horn, which is the last bit of modelling apart from the Lord ( which I don't even have yet).<br />
The eventual plan is to do a couple more Warriors when I get another box to be able to swap out the characters as well.<br />

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/BannersandSigs/vsign3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/Forum%20Stuff/BannersandSigs/vsign3.png" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Some thing I nearly always find myself doing is mixing up more Kneadatite (Green Stuff) than I need.<br />
<br />
I used to just stuff it under the bases of whatever mini I was working on at the time but then I had a better idea.<br />
<br />
Many WHFB and 40K Armies have little things that appear on a lot of the minis through out the force, tiny, insignificant, fiddly little things that in enough quantity help make the theme. Nurgle = pox/boils, Tomb Kings = Scarab Beetles, Orks( Orcs& Goblins) = little toad stools. There are more I'm sure but those are some I have experienced myself. There is also the more generic little teeth, horns, medallions, symbols and gem etc that adorn GW minis.<br />
<br />
Never waste a bit of GS again, use it to make pre fab bits for these details. ( If you are impatient like myself these will help speed up some of these details without the dreaded moment when you squish a bit you just finished while working on the next.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;">Things you'll need:</span><br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;">Good sharp knife, Blu/White tac ( poster stuff) Kneadatite ( GS/Green Stuff), an old paint brush and thin liquid polyester glue. Oh and a little box or pot for storage.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: white;">For this I'll just show the simplest use, but with a little extra effort and variation of shape you can fit this for most armies.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: #f1c232;">lil Green Balls.</span></span></span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/lilGreenBallsa_zps947bbebe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/lilGreenBallsa_zps947bbebe.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a><span style="color: white;"> Whenever left with some GS roll it into little balls, normally I just do this lightly in the palm of my hand with a finger tip. ( Hey Granny, I'm gonna tell you how to suck an egg!) drop em into an out of the way place or a storage pot and forget them til they are set and you are working on a model that you can use them for.</span><br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: white;"> Ok you built up a store of lil green balls, time to grab that rattly container and use them up. In this example Nurgle themes, boils, pox call em what you want, there is loads of places you can use them.</span><br />
<span style="color: white;">Sometimes perfect spheres are usable but something with a flat back is easier to glue in place.</span><br />
<span style="color: white;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: white;">Squidge a line of Blue Tac and place the ball you want to use on it.</span><br />
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: black;"> </span> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Grab your sharp knife and carefully cut them in half.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/lilGreenBallsdampe_zpsdd275e9b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/TutorialPictures/lilGreenBallsdampe_zpsdd275e9b.jpg" height="228" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Now you have a selection of pustules to glue on to whatever it is needs a dose of Papa Nurgles love. I Use Liquid Poly in small dabs to glue them on and then a brush to coat them with a bit more Liquid poly to seal them in place better. ( Hence the choice of thin.) <br />

That game got boring fast din't it lol. But you get the point, why wait for hundreds of little GSed details to cure so an item is safe for attack of the impatient sausage fingers when you can use up wastage to pre prep them and just wait for glue to dry instead?<br />

<br />
It is with some satisfaction I have finished converting up the Fly Head Sorcerer and base coated him up ready for painting.<br />
The plan was to create a unique sorcerer to use as a scroll caddy ( he might get a promotion ) with a big nod to an old Nurgle Champion I always liked, you know the one, you've probably seen it for silly money on Ebay if you searched with either the words Nurgle or Chaos Champion.<br />

<br />
It's been a fun conversion, although waiting for all the fiddly bits of GS cure before I could do the next bit was a bit of a grind. I do however have a horrible feeling he will have to be handled with care during gaming and transporting or break.<br />

<br />
Decided to jump on to a front rank figure on the Warriors unit painting to make a change without changing unit ( or army or game system for that matter). So the Units Champion got slapped about with the brush.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Champion_zps82da2829.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Champion_zps82da2829.jpg" height="640" width="481" /></a></div>

<br />
<b><span style="color: #f1c232;">Sorcerer.</span></b><br />
<br />
Next up is the Sorcerers staff top, it's not finished yet but is starting to look like it is blowing chunks for a suitably Nurgly spell, well maggots anyway. Also the midriff Nurgle symbol, antennae ends get a bit of work. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Sorcspew_zps5000e92a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Sorcspew_zps5000e92a.jpg" height="544" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
Just need to infill around the Maggoty bits with a bit of GS, tidy up a few bits and bobs and he is ready for base gravel and undercoat. No doubt I'll have to go over him again after undercoat as it always seems to find mistakes I don't.<br />
<br />
<br />
After that It's back to the exciting world of GSing shield fronts and painting warriors for a bit.<br />

<br />
Some progress on the Nurgle Sorcerer to show today.<br />
<br />
The fiddly job of adding Antennae and Palps has started with yet more wire formers as well as some more detailing on the head end of the Proboscis.<br />
I get the horrible feeling I might be pushing my luck with trying to GS such spindly and fragile parts though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Sorcererrear_zps9294af10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Sorcererrear_zps9294af10.jpg" height="522" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also started a bit more of the generic sort of Nurglification, boils, holes in the loin cloth and amour corrosion.</div>

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/WoNrearrank_zps904ccdfb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/WoNrearrank_zps904ccdfb.jpg" height="270" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First rank finished</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Actually managed to get a pretty decent shot of the rear rank all painted and finished. More than anything else this picture has got my excited about the project, something about starting to put a group of painted minis together for a picture is satisfying for a person that paints as slowly as I do. <br />
<br />
Unfortunately my work always gets hectic just after Christmas and New Years Eve which means not much time for models. I have managed to to do a bit more GSing on the scroll caddy Sorcerer though.<br />
<br />
First off the head; I was going to originally do a classic Fly head on him but the mouth parts just kept on turning out like a miniature Elephants trunk. After staring at various fly pictures I just gave up and rethought it somewhat and went with a blood sucker type bug. No one spreads disease like a mosquito so that was the vague idea here, yellow fever anyone?<br />
<br />
I have also cut out and then filled in a couple of open sores, blanked out a disk on his midriff ready for a Nurgle symbol as well as starting to fill a nasty mold line down the staff and arm .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Sorchead002_zps8734332a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Sorchead002_zps8734332a.jpg" height="504" width="640" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next was something for the staff top, once again I have had a change of heart. Originally the plan was to pop a Nurgle symbol on the end, but this just didn't work from certain angles. So with a couple of bits of wire I have made a form for a spiral which I will GS into a sort of spewing vomit style affair to represent a Nurgle spell.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hopefully getting an Airbrush for Christmas will cure that fear, well once I learn how to use it that is.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15299619773476420208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6127214330003127530.post-61535636666715161642015-01-03T23:24:00.001+00:002015-01-06T21:13:47.993+00:00Slowly but surely....<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Managed to find a sprue of Chaos Epic stuff I have been using as Banner tops and CSM shoulder pad detail for ages, which gave me an easy option for this chaps banner, also finished his shield detail.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Done the rest of the shield detail on the Champion, so he is ready for undercoating.</div>

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/CoN1_zps3b888fee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/CoN1_zps3b888fee.jpg" height="320" width="263" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Champion</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Time to start on the command group and characters for the regiment, partially because I need time to think up some more shield fronts.<br />
<br />
First up and nearly finished is the units Champion, had this chap in my 40K bits box so no cost on him, just a head swap, Orc cleaver and spare shield, the front detail is stolen from the top of a 40k Nurgle icon. Just need to tidy up the horn mounting and add a Nurgle symbol under the Skelly.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Musician_zps9a3ece02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Musician_zps9a3ece02.jpg" height="320" width="244" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Musician</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next is the Musician. I always thought the horn that comes in the box was
a bit meh, so this was going to have to change. Plan here is to make a
nasty worm type critter. So far just the basic form in Milliput over a
wire frame.Teeth and mouth next.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Sorc1a_zpsc10853ce.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/Sorc1a_zpsc10853ce.jpg" height="317" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sorcerer</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Lastly on the modelling front is a Sorcerer, this chap will be a low level scroll caddy.<br />
Fresh from Fleabay he came with the original head but no staff arm and the sword cut out of his other hand.<br />
By
pure chance I did a conversion for a friend when this chap was a new
release over a decade ago and had the Staff arm in my bits box. thus
proving I have been playing with little plastic and pewter men for too
long and hoard too much stuff. Plan is a funky kneadatite (GS) head
build, a Nurgle staff top and a scroll in the left hand.<br />

<br />
A Nurgle Warriors of Chaos is the new Project, the plan being to convert up as much as possible to bring out the Nurgle.<br />
<br />
A good place to start is a Warriors box, lots to convert and practice GS skills on for bigger things later on.<br />
Bit of a chop shop special on the paired helmet horns for a more Plaguebearer style single horn and removal of Shield detail.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/NWStage1b_zps83c868be.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll95/Vashtastic101/WHFB/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/Nurgle/Nurgle%20WIPs/NWStage1b_zps83c868be.jpg" height="305" width="640" /></a></div>
Now to start replacing all the shield detail. All sorts of ideas some stolen from the Forgeworld Death Guard shoulderpads.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As you can see I'm having a bit of trouble getting photos positioned where I want them, they just are not appearing on the final blog as they are on the editor. Hopefully I'll get that sorted next time when I find the right hammer for the job. :) Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15299619773476420208noreply@blogger.com0
